Chinese Company Set to Commence Nasiriyah Airport Construction

A military airport was given to China State Construction Engineering Corporation, a contract holder for the construction of a civilian airport.

The project for the development of the airport in Nasiriyah, the capital of the Southern Dhi Qar Governorate, was awarded to China State Construction Engineering Corporation in June, according to Dhi Qar Governor Ahmed Al-Khafaji.

As per Aliqtisadi News and other Iraqi sources, he stated that the firm is dedicated to finishing the airport on time in three years.

Khafaji added that the planned airport will cost roughly $367 million, but he did not specify whether the deal is part of an oil-for-projects agreement agreed between Baghdad and Beijing in 2019 that allows Chinese companies to carry out projects in Iraq in exchange for crude oil.

Officials announced in June that the airport would be built at a military base that was devastated during the Iraq war as part of post-war restoration efforts.
